wear
Style isn't something that is exclusively worn. It moves beyond buttons and cotton- it's what sits beneath the seams. It is how you feel as your bedroom door closes behind you each morning.
My favorite colors are neutrals, but my style is anything but commonplace. I grew up in a small suburb of Baltimore where everything is lined in bright blue and neon pink. My soft, flowy cream dresses and green lace tops were offbeat, out of the ordinary. The novelty woven into my skirts soon became my essence. Fashion became the way to express my quirkiness and desire to be someone unexpected. I soon crafted a unique style for myself with a little something bohemian from Free People, a touch of minimalism from rag & bone, some hippie Woodstock vibes, mixed with a chic, high fashion twist. There's a little bit of everything and yet nothing that has been done before.
To me, I suppose the most important part about one's style or fashion sense is the feeling of being calm and content. When you can't be confident in your own skin, clothing and fashion is there to bring about that particular feeling of comfort. To feel happy wearing only your skin is certainly the peak of happiness, but sometimes some linen pants and a silk top make do.
“I don't like standard beauty - there is no beauty without strangeness.”
— Karl Lagerfeld
Mirrors are a funny invention. In one aspect they are supposed to tell you how you look, as if glancing at yourself in the mirror every morning is about the nature of your outfit rather than the feelings that today's fabrics bring to light. Sure, we all purchase pieces of clothing because the craftsmanship is impeccable or the design on this black dress is different from anything else you own. But when you wake up and decide what to don yourself in, we await the sinking of one's chest upon finding exactly the right combination of pattern and simplicity, comfort and edginess. We await the feelings that emerge, the twirl of the torso, as confidence settles into our fine lines - the special feeling that only style seems capable of evoking.
